The #1 solution to the world’s #1 problem (Energy)

Corrupt Energy Politics
Arguably The Most Myopic Issue in America

Energy is THE Most Important Issue Facing America Today

The price and availability of energy impact everything that everyone buys. Escalating energy costs hurt poor people more than the rich. Corrupt subsidies for extremely-profitable companies that input foreign oil sends money to nations that harbor terrorists, and forces us to fight unpopular oil-related deadly wars. It has generated $9 Trillion in debt for our grandchildren, robbed our Social Security Trust Fund, leaving it insolvent, and diverted Trillions of Dollars away from education, healthcare and domestic jobs. Our legislators who have been purchased by fossil-fuel lobbyists cannot possible solve the problems that THEY created for us.

Buildings are THE most significant waster of energy in America – Even more than Transportation or Industry. Reducing building energy waste is even MORE important than dealing with our gas-guzzling environment-damaging inefficient American SUV's.

Since 1977, The U.S. Department Of Energy ( US DOE ) "Weatherization Assistance Program" has shown how quick, inexpensive and easy it is to reduce low-income home energy consumption by an average of 31%. This is the most cost-effective long-term energy consumption reduction program. Its cost-benefit characteristic is outstanding, BUT totally ignored by most American home owners, despite significant government incentive programs. (How sad)

Reducing NEW building energy consumption by 50% is relatively easy to do, at little additional cost (since most buildings are poorly designed by architects with almost no training in modern energy efficiency).

More than 70% energy consumption reductions have been demonstrated in 100,000 near-Zero-Energy Homes since 1978, but perhaps 25 million new buildings have ignored this well-documented technology, and their short-sighted owners are now paying unnecessarily-high energy bills, AND doing great damage to Earth's delicate environment. Worldwide energy conservation retrofits are long overdue. We need an immediate, cost-effective Conservation Transformation.

We need to MANDATE long-proven near-zero energy building codes, and STOP constructing new buildings that uselessly waste 70% to 90% of the expensive energy they consume. Making important global choices about cost effective energy retrofit priorities will become increasingly important. We can ELIMINATE the Trillion Dollar expense of international oil-related wars, and STOP sending our money to countries that harbor terrorists, IF we would end our deadly growing addiction to Persian Gulf oil. In our ZED book, we show precisely how "easily" this can be done with long-proven technology, in only ONE GENERATION.

The ZED solution does NOT require new technology. In conjunction with U.S. Department Of Energy ( US DOE )incentive programs, America demonstrated the primary technology elements decades ago, beginning in 1977. What we still lack today is EDUCATION, AGILITY and POLITICAL DETERMINATION to do what we inevitably will be FORCED to do anyway. The sooner we get started, the less traumatic the transition will be for our children.

Roughly, 85% of today’s electric energy is generated by burning dirty, nonrenewable, carbon-based “fossil fuels.” It has taken millions of years for plants and animals to capture solar energy, and the geologic sedimentation / compression process to convert it into coal, petroleum, and natural gas. Such fossil fuels can NOT be renewed in a millennium, and we are burning most of them up in only a century. Inefficiently burning fossil fuels for energy is quite unsustainable. It is robbing the future from our grandchildren, burdening them with avoidable debt, and leaving them with a badly damaged worldwide environment that cannot provide for our population explosion.

In the last few decades, the world has become very dependent on petrochemicals like plastics, fibers, fabrics, clothes, fiberglass, building materials, fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and many others. By squandering petroleum as a dirty fuel for inefficient use in vehicles, heating homes, generating electricity, mining and delivering dirty coal, making biofuels with less energy content, trucks, construction and farm equipment, we are rapidly depleting the source of the petrochemicals that we use to sustain so many aspects of our oil-based inefficient lifestyle.

America is only 4.5% of the world's exploding population, but we consume over 25% of the world's petroleum. Since U.S. internal oil production peaked and began to decline in 1971, we have rapidly increased our gluttonous oil imports to 67%. We've sent Trillions Of U.S. Dollars to oil-rich countries that raise radical suicidal terrorists who want to do us great harm.

Fossil fuels are clearly a short-term, DEAD END ROAD TO DISASTER that cannot be sustained much longer. The entire world MUST nearly eliminate fossil fuel consumption in the 21st Century. (First of all, it won’t be available, AND even if it were, it would cost too much, have unstable / unfriendly sources, lead to international energy wars, and eventually make our environment unlivable.) We must develop alternative energy sources.

Congress Versus The Planet

November 21, 2007 www.solar-nation.org/2007/11/21/congress-versus-the-planet
By Solar Nation’s Executive Campaigner, Chris Stimpson

On the West Coast, emergency crews are continuing to clean up the 58,000 gallons of oil that spilled from a container ship whose radar was better at missing the Golden Gate Bridge than the hull was…

At the UN, they produced a final summary of those IPCC studies that made Nobel Laureates of the scientists involved, spelling out the realities of global warming for those who still think it is the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people…

In Kansas, a huge order for utility-scale wind turbines for a wind farm went to a European company, because that industry (pioneered by NASA in the 1970’s) is now virtually non-existent here…

And in Washington, our elected leaders stripped out of the 2007 Energy Bill almost every single provision that could give renewable energy a fighting chance in this country, rather than offend their fossil-fuel-powered benefactors. (Senate Amendment 1704 to House Resolution 6)

When asked about the prospects of taking the bill to conference committee, Republican Senator Trent Lott observed: “the oil and gas industry don’t want to”; so, I guess, we won’t. As a result, the 2007 Energy Bill gives NO encouragement either to individuals wanting to install clean solar panels, or to companies trying to finance utility-scale wind farms. Nor does it establish national minima for renewable energy production. It may, however, make the U.S. taxpayer responsible for underwriting loans for new nuclear plants; it will throw billions of dollars at the questionable technology of corn-based ethanol, and it will allow Detroit to continue with business as usual, digging its own grave while the rest of the world targets 100 mpg.

Republican yes-men from red states are too easy a mark, of course. The dismal fact is that the way Congress governs is fundamentally unsuited to the vital task ahead of us, which is to mitigate our contribution to planet-wide climate change, and solving our avoidable energy crisis.

Somehow, the rest of the industrialized world has figured out what’s needed to keep us from driving ourselves extinct in the next forty to fifty years, (i.e., free, clean, renewable solar and wind energy, and massive reductions in greenhouse gas emissions). As a result, wind farms are common in Europe,
solar panels are sprouting like weeds across Germany, Italy, Japan and China, and their auto mileage standards are already far ahead of what U.S. car makers say they can’t manage by 2020.

But at a government level, we just don’t “get it”, do we? Our legislators, clinging to what they imagine to be a time-honored practice, deal, bargain, and compromise so as to not offend the vested interests on which their next re-election depends, and they defer to pressure from Administrations with questionable motives. As a result, essential bills are diluted to worthlessness. And most damning of all, our leaders allow the money that contaminates all of American politics to make their decisions for them,
to the detriment of Americans and the world, both today and tomorrow.

As Congress recessed for the Thanksgiving holiday, word was that Congressional leaders had heard the huge public outcry against the evisceration of a bill that could have made us take renewable's seriously
for the first time. (82% of Americans polled want the FULL 2007 Energy Bill passed.) Supposedly,
the money may be back on the table; but then, so is the turkey, and look what’s happening to that.

The true nightmare of global warming is not its ineluctability; solutions exist and are being put into practice in many countries. It is, rather, that the world’s greatest polluter is institutionally incapable of mending its ways.

To paraphrase, we have met the enemy, and the enemy is U.S.

Senator Harry Reid is the Majority Leader of the U.S. Senate

August 18, 2007, Reid told the Clean Energy Summit that he will do everything he can to STOP construction of proposed new coal-fired electric power plants

Reid wants utility companies to invest their billions of dollars in Solar, Wind and Geothermal Powe
r

Reid stated that Global Warming is a reality, and just ONE proposed coal-fired plant would contribute to it by burning Seven Million Tons Of Coal A Year. The long-term healthcare costs would be far too high.

"I'm going to do everything I can to STOP these plants," he said. "There is no clean coal technology. There is cleaner coal technology, but THERE IS NO CLEAN COAL TECHNOLOGY.”
ZED Strongly Agrees

Fossil Fuel Electricity Production Pollution

Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) is an invisible, pungent, toxic gas that causes Particulate Pollution, and Acid Rain. 3/4 of all sulfur dioxide emissions in the US are from electric utilities (mostly coal). Brief exposure to low level SO2 can cause an asthma attack. Asthmatics, and children in particular, are highly vulnerable to sulfur dioxide.

Health effects of sulfur dioxide exposure:
     • respiratory irritation
     • airway swelling
     • damages lung tissues
     • induces bronchial constriction in asthmatics
     • impairs breathing

Particulates are made of ash (heavy metals, arsenic, lead, cadmium, zinc, sulfates, nitrates, and hydrocarbons) Children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing heart and lung problems are at the greatest risk. About 64,000 people in the U.S. die prematurely each year due to particulate air pollution - More than car accidents or AIDS.
15,000 deaths are directly caused by power plant emissions (American Lung Association)

Particulate Health Effects:
• lung damage and reduced lung function
• hospital admissions for asthma and bronchitis
• cardiovascular and pulmonary disease
• sinusitis - runny or stuffy nose - sore throat
• cough and phlegm
• head colds
• hay fever
• burning or red eyes
• wheezing - shortness of breath

Repeated Long-Term Exposure can cause:
• cancer
• avoidable premature death
• increased hospitalizations for respiratory and cardiac diseases

Ozone (O3) is the primary element of urban smog. Ozone
is especially dangerous for children, the elderly, and the ill.
Ozone causes over 1.5 million cases per year of significant
respiratory problems in children and adults.

Short-Term Health Effects of Ozone:
• lung irritation and inflammation
• accelerated oxidation (aging) of lung tissue
• eye irritation
• coughing
• nasal congestion
• limited lung capacity and athletic performance
• inhalation pain and chest tightness
• respiratory diseases such as asthma and emphysema
• suppressed immune system
• increased sensitivity to allergens

Long-Term Health Effects of Ozone:
• lung cancer – avoidable premature death
• infection susceptibility, such as bronchitis & pneumonia
• permanent irreversible tissue and structural lung damage
• chronic lung disease

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless, poisonous gas. Carbon monoxide bonds to hemoglobin, blocking the blood’s ability to carry oxygen and causing suffocation. Long exposure, or short-term high concentrations are fatal.

Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) are formed when fossil fuels burn, combining atmospheric nitrogen with oxygen. Nitrogen Oxides cause respiratory illness and lung damage. They are associated with colds that settle in the chest, chronic wheezing and coughing, bronchitis, chest cough with phlegm, and episodes of respiratory illness. Nitrogen Dioxide causes pulmonary disease. NO2 increases susceptibility to respiratory infections.

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is a colorless, odorless greenhouse gas that causes man-made climate change. Global Warming can lead to the spread of infectious diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, and schistosomiasis. It also aggravates air quality problems, which increase the negative health impact of the other air pollutants previously described.

Global climate was stable for 10,000 years
The worldwide average temperature changed by less than one degree Celsius. With the large
increase of CO2 in the last century, average temperature is rising rapidly. It is predicted that
the average temperature will rise by 2-6 degrees Fahrenheit in the next century, with many different kinds of worldwide negative impacts.

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic, heavy metal which can circulate in the air for a year, and then concentrate in water, where it makes fish toxic, and eventually animals, humans AND our babies' milk.  Much of the Mercury in USA water comes from China & India. Many U.S. waterways contain high levels of Mercury in the marine life. Fish from these areas should NEVER be eaten by humans or animals. Fish that eat fish concentrate Mercury and become MORE toxic.

Fossil fuel power generation (primarily COAL) has already badly polluted a once-valuable and nutritious food source, and made it deadly. AND, our world has plans to greatly expand dirty coal-fired power plants that will emit large amounts of Mercury.  Even the expensive new IGCC coal technology spews out very serious quantities of toxic Mercury.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS “CLEAN COAL”

Exposure to Mercury (in water, fish, milk, …) can cause:
• kidney failure
• numbness in the arms and legs
• defects in fetuses and young children (mother’s milk)
 • mental development problems
• loss of motor skills
• blurred vision
• loss of hearing
• slurred speech
• Avoidable Early Death

Mercury Damages the:
• brain (entire being)
• central nervous system
• digestive system
• liver (regulation, synthesis)
• kidneys (toxin removal)
• pancreas (insulin, diabetes)
• immune system (survival)

IS COAL-FIRED POWER WORTH HIGH HEALTH COSTS?
Do profit-motivated power companies care at all?

The sad health damage from fossil fuels is slow and subtle, (like smoking
and trans fats) but it accumulates over time

Fossil fuel pollution robs years from people, takes loved ones away,
and greatly increases avoidable pain & suffering

Is that what YOU want for your grandchildren?

What will our legacy be?

Future DIRTY Coal Power Plant Construction By 2012
U.S. 72, India 213, China 562 (2 New Plants / WEEK !)

Double The CO2 Emissions + Deadly Mercury & Sulfur
WE MUST DONATE TECHNOLOGY TO PREVENT THIS
We MUST Make Coal FAR TOO EXPENSIVE To Use

“Clean Coal” MYTH - Sequester CO2 - Scrub Pollution Never Been Done Before
– A Risky Political Football Would cost 40% - 70% MORE & produce 20% LESS !

Politicians don’t have a clue about the science
They rely on those who CREATED today’s problems

Will YOU pay $.30+ / kWh for coal-fired electricity,
when PV solar electricity costs only $.03 / kWh ?

Energy planners seem clueless about predictable trends
They completely lack the imagination for what tomorrow MUST look like

Coal-Fired Electricity: USA 50%, Florida 40%

Florida imports $500+ million of dirty coal / year
Significant Mercury, Sulfur AND Global Warming

A Lot Of OIL is required to deliver a ton of coal
Coal mining KILLS many good men, various ways

American Lung Association says 3/4 of Floridians  breathe unhealthy air (from coal and petroleum) Causes 1/4 million lost work days, 31,000 asthma  attacks & 1,740 premature avoidable deaths/year!

Suppose you turn on your television and the news says that there is a serial killer in your home state He is traveling all over your state and randomly terminating 4 or 5 young & old people EVERY DAY Worse yet, he has been doing it for decades, and no one seems very concerned about it ! ? ! ? !

That’s exactly what burning coal and oil to produce electricity in Florida (and other states) is doing TODAY

No one cares to Live In Harmony With Nature
No one cares about the health of our children

Then you learn that your Energy Commission is going to allow the power companies that created this killer to charge rate payers to design a $5 BILLION huge coal fired plant to be completed in 2014 (producing VERY expensive electricity)

Do you care?    What would YOU do?

U.S. power companies want to build 72 new coal plants
ZED Energy Efficiency can totally eliminate the need

Future Gen Risky $1.5B 10-Year U.S. Experiment to see if a coal-fired plant with low CO2, Mercury
& Sulfur emissions is possible with available technology
   www.futuregenalliance.org/publications/fg_icdr_052507_v2.pdf

No one has ever done it before – Huge challenges

Will cost significantly more than conventional coal

Will produce less electricity at a much higher cost Not cost effective or competitive with other sources

Only possible in very few special geologic locations Can’t work everywhere – Higher transmission cost Possible blow-out or leakage of sequestered CO2

Much longer plant investment payback period, during which time other technologies will advance

Coal mining and delivery will still require a lot of oil

Like most government-managed development projects, it is NOT likely to finish on time or within budget, or meet its unprecedented aggressive objectives

A Political Pipe Dream - Waste Of Time And Money

Despite the lies told by pork-barrel politicians,
THERE IS NO “CLEAN COAL” TECHNOLOGY
Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC)

A new emerging technology that FRACTIONALLY reduces (but does NOT eliminate) toxic emissions from coal-fired power plants – IGCC still emits deadly mercury (which damages infants), VOC’s, and a reduced amount sulfur and nitrogen oxides
IGCC is better than conventional coal, but still NOT CLEAN!
Calling IGCC “Clean Coal” is Immoral Dishonest Deception
IGCC is ILLEGAL in more-intelligent places like California

IGCC uses less water than a conventional coal-fired plant, but it emits about 80% of CO2 – Contributing greatly to man-made climate change Global Warming problems

American Lung Association says coal-and-oil-fired power plants cause great health problems, and 1,740 premature avoidable Floridian deaths / year !

The new IGCC Dirty-Coal power plant being built in Orlando Florida will myopically make Health & Global Warming Problems WORSE

IGCC Truth Contradicts Politician’s LIES

Sulfur & Nitrogen Oxides are lower, BUT VOC’s & Mercury are Similar To Conventional Coal Plants Mercury enters water supply - TOXIC Water, Milk & Fish

IGCC plants emit 80% of the CO2 of conventional coal
Significant contribution to man-made climate change

IGCC plants use 20-40% less water than conventional

IGCC uses a bit less coal than conventional plants

IGCC plants cost 20% to 60% more than modern coal plants
and about twice the price of natural gas plants

Costs for IGCC electricity, without CO2 capture,
is at least 20% higher than a modern coal power plant

Capturing CO2 would increase cost over 30%,
plus transportation sequestration costs (Foolish Future Gen)

There is still a 3-to-1 Central Generation / Transportation Inefficiency

Coal plant costs can NOT compete with declining-price Photovoltaic

2009 Texas Adding 8,950 Megawatts of  NEW Dirty Coal-Fired Electricity Generation

59% of U.S. 2009 Dirty Coal-Fired Expansion:  Enormous Mercury, Sulfur & CO2 Pollution

Coal pollutes MUCH worse than Natural Gas

During the 20th Century Oil Boom, myopic Texas oil men burned off natural gas in flare towers, since it was worth much less than oil Texas must use diesel fuel to import dirty coal

2/3 of U.S. petrol. production comes from Texas Texas City refineries give Texas some of the most deadly polluted air on the planet

Inefficient Texas Trucks & SUV’s Pollute The Air

Adding coal-fired plants in Texas (instead of major use of abundant solar energy) is OUTRAGEOUS !

Distributed PV would cost MUCH LESS Superior Energy Efficiency would eliminate much of the need

21st Century Worldwide Energy Future Alternatives

In the 19th and 20th centuries, America set a frenzied pace of escalating inefficient energy consumption. It fueled our industrialization and rapid technology explosion. In recent years, a similar thing is happening to many other countries, as they demand unprecedented per-capita energy resources, and all of the many problems that go with it. A growing supply of inexpensive, clean, renewable, abundant, alternative energy is necessary for prosperity, and to help reduce worldwide poverty. The global trend of inefficient use of non-renewable energy can NOT be sustained with yesterday’s fossil fuels that badly damage the environment and have escalating costs and serious supply shortage, while energy demand is increasing exponentially.

With the exception of a few electric trains and sailboats, most of the world’s transportation energy comes from burning our limited supply of petroleum. New wealth from rapid globalization is making cars available to hundreds of millions of new individuals, whose families could never afford one before. This is happening at a time when we are exceeded worldwide peak oil production capacity, and future gasoline supplies are about to to significantly decline. The world in now burning nearly six barrels of petroleum for every one new barrel that is being discovered.

Obviously, this snowballing downhill trend can NOT be sustained for more than very few short years. The damage to Earth’s climate / environment, serious supply shortages, and the spiraling price of gasoline and diesel fuel MUST soon bring petroleum-based transportation to a rapid decline. We cannot continue our gluttonous transportation lifestyle without radically improved 21st Century transportation alternative energy.

We must learn from the past, but not dwell on it. We need to amplify and build upon our good experiences; Learn from, laugh at, and correct previous bad things. We need to develop and dwell on a persuasive picture- perfect vision of the future that influences all of our thoughts.

We did not inherit the Earth from our parents, to plunder for our selfish desires. We borrow the Earth from our children, and we must return it to them one day soon.

Our children and grandchildren will judge the value of OUR lives
by the legacy we leave behind for them and theirs.

In the early years of America's western growth and prosperity, Johnny Apple seed taught young pioneers to "Plant Fruit Trees For Your Grandchildren." Today's selfish "Me First Generation" is leaving huge debt, fewer good jobs, an unsustainable infrastructure, corrupt politics, and unprecedented environmental damage.

THESE TRENDS MUST BE REVERSED IMMEDIATELY. ENERGY IS THE NUMBER ONE ISSUE, and Zero Energy Design clean, renewable FREE energy is the number one proven economic, ecology, energy, and environment solution in the world today. Our non-learning nation needs a Conservation Transformation TODAY.

ZED Energy Summary for Politicians and Legislators

Solar energy is an important refreshing element of the U.S. Energy Policy Act of 2005  government-subsidized legislation to promote Zero Energy Homes, as a step toward resolving the new millennium American Energy Crisis. The wise solar energy tax credits instituted by Jimmy Carter in 1978 (and destroyed by Ronald Reagan in April 1981) were improved and reinstated in the 2005 Energy Policy Act. Thank you very much, but we still need a lot more from YOU, including subsidies that last beyond 2007, until this important job is well on it’s way to a healthy solid foundation. Look how long America subsidized petroleum (for a century). How long will it take to break the very bad habits that the government’s petroleum subsidies created, by encouraging our very bad energy wasting behaviors?

Much of the new alternative energy legislation being introduced in the 2007 U.S. Congress offers interesting potential. We hope it is not "too little too late", and that the devastating decades of partisan energy politics, and energy industry political corruption, can be overcome SOON.

The 2007 budget included only $148 million dollars in solar energy research funding. George Bush’s 2008 budget proposal repeated this small number, which is actually a funding cut when we consider the negative impact of inflation. Despite this unenlightened token funding level, solar energy equipment sales increased 45% in each of the last two years. Consider the following basic mathematics.

Inefficient American buildings waste more energy, and add more atmospheric pollution than either our inefficient American transportation or dirty industrial processes. Solar energy has the potential to solve these problems, AND eliminate the need for any oil-related wars. George Bush asked for $120 BILLION PER YEAR for the next two years for the oil-related ghastly war in Iraq. Bush’s 2008 budget request for solar energy R&D is AT LEAST ONE THOUSAND TIMES LESS THAN WHAT IS COST JUSTIFIED. If we eliminate our bad addiction in oil imported from countries that want to do us great harm, it can directly save of Trillions of dollars of near-term future debt for our innocent grandchildren. DO OUR POLITICAL REPRESENTATIVES EVEN CARE? Extremely-corrupt oil-based energy politics-as-usual is a national catastrophe.

Zero Energy Design Vision

“Where there is no vision, the people perish.”

Humans MUST have a compelling irresistible vision of a superior challenging tomorrow. It provides the Action Motivation (discussed in Chapter Three of the ZED ebook) to solve problems and move forward in the midst of adversity.

Hope is the essence of continual improvement, and the inspiration for making every new day incrementally better than yesterday. Focusing on the many errors and failures of the past, can lead to either negative depression, or the positive search for superior future solutions. Each of us must choose our attitude toward the past and future, which will determine the potential of what we will surely become.

We must learn from the past, but not dwell on it. We need to amplify and build upon our good experiences; Learn from, laugh at, and correct previous bad things. We need to develop and dwell on a persuasive picture-perfect vision of the future that influences all of our thoughts and motivation.

Biofuels from Food Crops are a VERY BAD Unsustainable Alternative

The explosion of Earth’s population from 1.9 billion to 6.7 billion in only 100 years has resulted in massive starvation and insufficient freshwater for drinking, bathing, or raising crops. As Earth’s population redoubles multiple times in the 21st century, we cannot easily reverse this unsustainable trend. Billions of children and adults WILL starve, and water will become the source of international wars. Serious threats of wars about disrupting water supplies have already been expressed. We cannot easily correct these problems, BUT we can and should STOP doing things (like producing Biodiesel ) that make these serious issues much worse.

Following America’s irrational ($0.51 per gallon) subsidies for converting food crops like corn and soy beans into biofuels, the price of food staple corn in Mexico suddenly tripled in January 2007, causing major demonstrations, and becoming THE most importation topic when President Bush visited Mexico in March 2007. Fidel Castro reasonably asserted that America’s bad biofuels politics will result in early death by starvation and lack of fresh water of perhaps 3 billion people. It must very soon become internationally illegal to divert food crops to supply biofuel, to be wasted by America's inefficient transportation vehicles.

"OECD Warns Against Biofuel Subsidies"
From the
Financial Times

Ethanol From Corn ( Biodiesel ) Is Killing Many Americans

The corrupt legislators who buy votes from farmers by heavily subsidizing the irrational production of ethanol from corn (for inefficient American vehicles) COVER UP the subtle consequences of their actions. For example:

One of the byproducts of making biodiesel is a large volume of High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS). Recently, HFCS has appeared in many sweet drinks and products targeted at our innocent children. HFCS is known to atrophy the pancreas, which is the source of essential insulin (necessary to metabolize dietary fats and sugars). HFCS (from the production of heavily-subsidized American ethanol) is now known to be directly causing a rapid increase of Obesity and DIABETES in millions of Naive Americans. This is a unique deadly problem in the USA.

HFCS from ethanol production damages the Heart, Liver (and Male Testes) – HFCS interferes with copper metabolism so Collagen and Elastin (the sinews that hold the body together) cannot properly form, Check your food labels - You may be very surprised at how many American foods have unhealthy HFCS.

There is direct correlation between rapidly-declining American health and consumption of deadly HFCS, but we have biodiesel.

Another byproduct of producing ethanol from corn is Starchy Animal Feed, which rapidly increases animal body weight with extremely-unhealthy Saturated Fat. Eating animals raised on this type of Rapid-Fattening Feed (from ethanol production) greatly contributes to American Obesity, high levels of Bad Cholesterol (VLDL and LDL), Heart Disease, Brain Strokes, Dementia and Heart Attacks

There is direct correlation between rapidly declining American health and consumption corn-fed beef, but we have biodiesel.

Our bodies MUST have certain Essential Fatty Acids - One of the most important is Omega-3 Fatty Acid. It MUST be in our diet – Our bodies can NOT synthesize Omega-3 from other food sources. Filthy-feedlot corn-fed beef have little Omega-3. Free-ranging organic beef that eat fresh grass produce significant amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids. Most Americans consume less than 5% of the Omega-3 Fatty Acids that are well-known to be ESSENTIAL to good health. Did YOU know that subsidizing the production of ethanol from corn is one of the contribution factors leading to early, unnecessary death of Americans. Thank you, producers of biodiesel.

Irrational Corrupt Energy Politics and Bad Legislation
(from an Energy Expert’s Scientific Perspective)

“We have a SERIOUS problem. America is addicted to oil, which is often imported from unstable parts of the world.” – George Bush

Within a single generation, Zero Energy Design principles (in buildings and transportation) have the long-documented potential to completely eliminate the need to import ANY petroleum from unstable Persian Gulf nations, which harbored, funded, and trained the terrorists of 9/11/2001, and some of today’s most expensive international wars (over a TRILLION dollars for Iraq alone).

With spiraling upward oil prices, a TWO TRILLION DOLLAR A YEAR petroleum market, unstable wars / politics / terrorism in the Middle East, an increasingly-belligerent Iran (world’s second largest source of petroleum), the aftermath of Global Warming, Hurricane Katrina, and premium prices for high-gas-mileage cars, ENERGY SECURITY HAS BECOME A MAJOR AMERICAN PUBLIC POLICY PRIORITY.

If Americans followed the recommendations of the U.S. Department Of Energy, and the concepts presented at the huge National Energy Expositions THREE DECADES AGO, American's would now be spending $200 BILLION LESS PER YEAR on energy. Corrupt energy politics, and a general lack of energy education, has prevented rational behavior for FAR TOO LONG. Our non-learning nation needs a major conservation transformation. Imagine what we could do with and extra net $200 BILLION dollars a year: healthcare, education, more-and-better jobs - a prosperous, growing, debt-free economy with NO OIL-RELATED WARS! Alternative Energy can solve this and is available today.

Failed politicians with no track record of worthwhile energy policy improvements over many decades are now blaming their political rivals and large oil companies for price gouging. Hundreds of alternative energy-related bills have been submitted in the U.S. Congress and Senate, since the last insufficient energy bill was passed in 2005. Most of the non-renewable energy legislation that is now being considered merely perpetuates the petroleum-subsidy energy errors and man-made climate change policies of the last hundred years, and does little to correct today’s energy crisis quickly.

The E85 ethanol price subsidy, biodiesel, and coal gasification research do NOT eliminate the terrible greenhouse gases that are accelerating our push toward the Global Warming tipping point. America is badly stuck in an ugly energy quagmire of obsolete technology and misguided political rhetoric by people who have never learned how to live in harmony with nature.

In a June 2006 political rally, John Kerry said: "Our reliance on oil not only props up decaying and dictatorial regimes, but those that tolerate and sustain terrorist groups." He explained that U.S. military success MUST be backed with policies aimed at energy independence to win the war on terrorism.

Of course, the above Kerry quote was based on important truth, BUT how we get there is the argument of the day. Do we need to wait decades to begin implementation of well-known principles of ZED from 27 years ago?

Beyond what politicians like Bush and Kerry say, our ultimate goal in the war on terrorism AND energy price increases, must be elimination of the modern American waste of gigantic amounts of expensive petroleum, and replacement with an abundant supply of inexpensive clean renewable energy (available almost everywhere in the U.S. for free) from the sun. Any solution that involves burning anything (except totally clean hydrogen) will result in perpetuating the deadly pace of greenhouse gases that cause Global Warming. Even hydrogen that is now being produced inefficiently from natural gas contributes to the serious Global Warming problem, since natural gas hydrogen production releases CO2.

Solar, wind, hydroelectric, and geothermal energy are essentially the only immediately available popular renewable energy technology solutions that do not put Global Warming CO2 into the atmosphere, and of those, solar energy is superior in a great many ways. Nicoli Tesla’s first Niagara Falls power plant was a wonderful thing, but the best hydroelectric sites have already been developed. Wind power is a good solution, but it is not as widely available as is direct solar energy for heating and cooling air and water, and for photovoltaic electric energy. Geothermal hot springs are valuable, but there are relatively few of them around the earth. Direct photochemical production of hydrogen from water is an interesting laboratory possibility, but the experts in the field think it is at least 15 years away from commercialization. There are several possibilities to take advantage of ocean currents, waves and temperature differentials, but their cost effectiveness has yet to be demonstrated. In contrast, many passive solar homes were very cost-effective three decades ago, and even better now. We need additional funding for these alternative energy resources.

The infrastructure to support the heavily-subsidized, petroleum-based American economy is aging rapidly. America reached its oil-producing peak in the early 1970’s, and we have been declining ever since. The petroleum that is still being produced in the U.S. costs over $10 a barrel just to get out of the ground to the pump, and the finite supply is being rapidly depleted. In contrast, Saudi Arabian oil only costs about $0.80 to produce (but we paid up to $77 a barrel for it in 2006). The Saudi’s (wisely) lowered oil prices for the American 2006 election to help keep oil-friendly politicians in office and reduce the political backlash against petroleum, but in the future, America will soon see oil prices rise again to new highs over $80 a barrel and beyond. Middle eastern oil producers have learned how to manipulate non-learning Americans like a drug pusher does with his hopeless drug addicts.

New American petroleum refineries have not been built since U.S. oil production peaked in the 1970’s, and old ones are literally exploding under the high stress we must place on them to meet growing gasoline demand. George Bush has proposed shortsighted increased petroleum subsidies and building new petroleum refineries (on closed military bases). This myopic oil-expansion mind set is NOT a sustainable energy future. Ultimately, petroleum is a dead end dirt road to disaster. Anything that delays its demise (like Ronald Reagan’s petroleum subsidies) is a stupid step in the wrong direction.

Critical pipelines like the Alaskan Prudhoe Bay supply line and others are failing, due to poor design, faulty construction, poor operation, delayed expensive maintenance, etc. At the first of 2006, the North Slope's biggest ever oil spill was discovered when a critical pipeline leaked 267,000 gallons of oil before it was noticed and stopped. George Bush proposes significantly increasing oil production in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) by a million barrels a day. The petroleum industry is progressively getting much WORSE not better. The high price we pay at the pump is NOT being reinvested wisely in maintaining the critical petroleum infrastructure, or replacing petroleum with a superior alternative. If petroleum companies making unprecedented windfall profits refuse to invest wisely in their own infrastructure or a superior alternative, then the rest of America should NOT invest in petroleum companies with continued huge tax subsidies for their ongoing shortsighted stupidity!

It will be VERY expensive to repair the declining American oil infrastructure now, and even more so in the near future. Consumers and taxpayers will ultimately carry the full weight of the economic hardship caused by extreme mismanagement of energy. It is not just the materials and labor to repair the many infrastructure problems that keep surprising inept myopic governments and corporate mismanages. It is also the economic damage to the environment, federal/state/local government tax base, institutions and individuals that depend on our rapidly failing petroleum infrastructure. Recent oil refinery fires/explosions and pipeline failures have done damage to all of these.

Do Americans really want to spend a TRILLION dollars to rebuild the failing petroleum infrastructure? - So we can continue to support Persian Gulf countries that tolerate and sustain terrorists, and the inept, over-paid executives of our large oil companies? OR, would that huge sum of money be better spent on rapidly implementing ZERO ENERGY DESIGN and clean alternative renewable energy production and efficient energy usage in complete harmony with nature, with NO greenhouse gases?

You vote with your dollars every time you buy a gas guzzling SUV, pay your ever-escalating energy bills (when you could avoid them altogether), or send taxes to outrageously inept politicians that you help elect (by voting unwisely, or by not going to the polls).

ZED actually applauds the fact that disruptions in American oil supply are regularly impacting the price and availability of oil to Americans, BECAUSE supply disruptions (oil, power grid, etc.) are a reality that SHOULD make our nation quickly rethink our dependence on our unstable, declining, polluting, obsolete energy sources. Excellent renewable alternative energy sources like solar energy solutions are READILY AVAILABLE. We merely need to lose our ridiculous resistance to inevitable change. If $10 / gallon gasoline pump price, $10 natural gas, and $1 per KWH electricity will make it happen faster, then BRING IT ON! (But, we MUST subsidize those poor people who can least afford it during the necessary transition away from yesterday’s misguided subsidies of bad political energy policies.)

An outage in a critical petroleum infrastructure like the Gulf of Mexico oil platforms after hurricane Katrina can surely disrupt essential energy in the U.S. drastically. Very poor (inept and ignorant) energy policies, and bad resource management, have made our nation very ENERGY INSECURE. Our short sighted Non-Learning Nation is operating on the edge of a knife that can cut us deeply with only a small (predictable) oil infrastructure failure, act of terrorism, natural disaster, or imported oil disruption from countries that do not agree with our unpopular wars and domineering religious politics. OPEC controls the energy resources that we are badly addicted to, and radical Arabians (and Venezuelans) are getting madder at us every day. We saw what OPEC did in 1973, and we failed to learn the critical lesson back then. We saw what they did to us on 9/11/2001 and have now felt the TRILLIONS of dollars of economic impact of that one event for over five years. We watch our brave patriotic children die in unpopular oil-related Persian Gulf wars. When will we begin to comprehend the many mistakes of our bad energy policy ways? Will we EVER wake up and learn anything from our stupid American energy errors, and IGNORE-ance of the truth that was clearly demonstrated 27 years ago and subsidized by the President who wisely created the U.S. Department of Energy (US DOE)?.
